What We Do

Teachers Engagement
As educators, we have successfully empowered teachers in Marakwet East to become advocates for the positive changes we envision in our schools, ensuring the ongoing progress continues even after our visits.

Life Skills training for school girls
Empowering girls through school-based life skills training on SRHR, school retention, FGM, and teenage pregnancy prevention. This initiative targeted both primary and secondary school students, encouraging them to pursue their education despite challenges. The program placed a strong focus on addressing the high dropout rates among girls, particularly those affected by FGM, highlighting the importance of continuing their studies for a brighter future.

Community Dialogues
Holding community dialogues with targeted women and men on the harmful effects of FGM on their children. These men and women are fathers and mothers of girls who are vulnerable and can easily be cut.

Engagement of survivors
We have engaged with survivors to be able to process their traumas and tell their stories, hence shield their daughters from FGM.

Engagement of girls
At Light A Girl Initiative, we prioritize girl-centered approaches by empowering girls in schools to take charge of their safety and become advocates for their well-being.
During school holidays, we organize forums for girls and young mothers across different locations. These sessions focus on fostering emotional well-being, providing essential knowledge to help them confidently stand up for their rights, and offering support to survivors as they navigate the healing process.

Engagement of local administration
Engaged the local administrative leaders (chiefs and ACCs) to support us in the villages in surveillance and fighting against FGM. These chiefs also aid in the arrests of perpetrators of FGM

Partnering with other organizations in doing advocacy
We leverage every opportunity that comes our way to advance our cause of the need to end FGM/C, and to give hope and support to survivors. Forums such as peace meetings, local chiefs’ barazas, among others, are some of the platforms we take advantage of. We also partner with other non-profits and CBOs within the region.
